The Chinese Dragon Boat Festival
The Dragon Boat Festival is a lunar holiday, occurring on the fifth day of the fifth lunar monthThe Chinese Dragon Boat Festival is a significant holiday celebrated in China, and the one with the longest history. The Dragon Boat Festival is celebrated by boat races in the shape of dragons. Competing teams row their boats forward to a drumbeat racing to reach the finish end first.
The boat races during the Dragon Boat Festival are traditional customs to attempts to rescue the patriotic poet Chu Yuan. Chu Yuan drowned on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month in 277 B.C. Chinese citizens now throw bamboo leaves filled with cooked rice into the water. Therefore the fish could eat the rice rather than the hero poet. This later on turned into the custom of eating tzungtzu and rice dumplings.
The celebration's is a time for protection from evil and disease for the rest of the year. It is done so by different practices such as hanging healthy herbs on the front door, drinking nutritious concoctions, and displaying portraits of evil's nemesis, Chung Kuei. If one manages to stand an egg on it's end at exactly 12:00 noon, the following year will be a lucky one.
端午節
農 暦五月五日は端午節である。「端陽節」、「重午節」とも称されるこの祭日は長い歴史を持っていて、毎年端午節に龍舟比賽（ドラゴンボートレース）が各地で 行われる。古代の偉大な愛国詩人屈原氏記念から由来する。中国の唐の時代にはすでに「節分端午自誰言、万古伝聞為屈原」という詩句が歌われた。 紀元前340年に生まれた屈原氏は斉の国と携えて秦の国に抗争するという奇策をもって楚の国王に進言したが受け入れられず、讒言に陥られ左遷された。
紀元前278年五月五日、楚の国が秦の国に併合されたことを聞いた屈原氏は汨羅江に身を投じて亡楚に殉死した。当時、屈原氏の殉国を悲しく聞いた人々は舟を競い救いにかけたが失敗し、仕方なく棕（ちまき）の葉で恕]を 包んで川に投げ込んで魚を飼い、雄黄の酒を傾けて川に注ぎ悪竜を追いたて、屈原氏の遺体を全うとした。以来、端午節になって、ちまきを食べたり、竜舟を 競ったり、雄黄の酒を飲んだり、香り袋を着けたり、よもぎを掛けたりするのが人々の習わしとなってきた。田舎の鉄道の線路を使って、多くの人々がその上に 生卵を立てていく行事もある。生卵をたてて1年の幸運を祈る。
